Maine Political Figures

These are the political figures that were born in and/or were associated in Maine.

Hannibal Hamlin– This Maine native became Abraham Lincoln’s Vice President.

Leigh Saufley– This native of Maine was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme court.

Percival Baxter– This Governor bought land in northern Maine for the purpose of a game reserve. Over the course of 30 years he had bought 90,000 acres. This land was donated for Baxter State Park.

Margaret Chase Smith– This woman from Skowhegan was elected into the U.S. Senate; making her the first ever woman to be voted into office and also the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress.

Angus King– He became the first popularly independent elected governor in the history of the United States.

Edmund Muskie– This Maine native and US Senator replaced Cyrus Vance as President Carter’s Secretary of State.

George J. Mitchell– A native of Waterville, ME was the U.S. Senate Majority Leader.

James B. Congley– This Brunswick native was the second popularly elected independent governor in U.S. history.

William Cohen– This Bangor resident was President Clinton’s Secretary of Defense.
